Saving.....

This morning I told my notebook PC to save all the photos to my 500 gig external drive.

I have about 20 gigs of images on this notebook, and it's getting crowded!
On the desk top, another 20 gigs of photos.... and many are dupes.
This is getting out of hand.

My plan..... (This is scary) is to get every photo I have on every machine all loaded to one huge folder. I'll back this up on my external drive just to be safe.

Then..... (gut wrenching fear) I'll delete every photo I have in my Photoshop albums, which have mostly been moved around and have broken links, and have Photoshop go snatch all the images from the big folder instead.

This should catch all the dupes, and have all my photo's cataloged in one spot. It should also let me set up a real image filing system based on the Photoshop catalog. I can use the software to set up retrieval categories and separate albums, and THIS time I'll let it store where it wishes rather than me moving all the files around so the software can't find them.

Sounds like a plan, doesn't it? Also sounds like about 30 hours of work...... cataloging all the photos, deleting the junk, making up coherent albums, and making beer runs.

I need 30 hours in one spot... just me, my computer, and the hard drive.
No distractions. Hmm........ Sounds like time for a road trip!

I'd respectfully recommend an additional backup, as well.

Having been in the IT business for well over a decade, and into computers for over a decade before that, I can make this observation with full faith in its truth:

There are two kinds of hard drives: ones that have failed, and ones that are going to fail.

Yikes. I know what it's like to have "photo overload" too. Mr Greenthumb and I went on a trip to historic Johnsville over the weekend, which has lots of, you know: historic buildings, a cemetery with all kinds of crumbling marble grave markers from the gold rush days, beautiful scenery, flowers everywhere... I came back with 300 pics to process. And I haven't even finished the June pictures. I have NO idea when I'll have the time, and it's going to take hours and hours to do so! Bleh.

Good luck on your marathon session, and yes, backup your backup too!
