Bloody well about time! X-prize competition for a 100 mpg car to reach market

Yes, I said... Bloody well about time.

I believe the best way to get something done, done right, and done fast is to make it a profitable activity. Then people will want to do it.

This is not rocket science.... this is something any parent of a two year old will understand.

A new X-prize has been announced. This one is for the development of a marketable car that gets an honest 100 mpg.

So far the drive to increase fuel economy in this country has been mostly stick, with damn little carrot. The stick being federal CAFE fuel mileage requirements imposed on the manufacturers. The carrot being market driven desire for an economical vehicle.

Lets face it, look around the roads. There is only just so much market for economy. It's popular, but only so far. The market is still stronger for beastie vehicles and SUV's (myself included).

A project like this X-prize will get the minds humming and the inventive people moving. This is always a good thing for the human race.
