One of the skills I am picking up is cutting and polishing
slabs. Specifically, agate geodes right now.
A feature of these is the slab is usually translucent
and beautiful. It's best when light is shining through it.
To that end, I wanted a display device that would hold a
slab and a candle.... and it was so easy to make.
My first try was from a simple 2x4, to work out what I wanted.
Now, the final product is made from rare hard wood.

I don't know what the slice of agate costs, but you could sell those. Beautiful.
You took the words right out of my mouth, Lin! Sign me up, Art, I want to be the first one to place an order! I've been a rock hound since I was a kid; I remember hunting for fossils and completely losing track of time in sweet oblivion as I'd traipse through the "sand pit" near the brick factory where my dad worked, looking for treasures, and coming home with my pockets full of rocks. Something about a piece of the earth that is so old, but can be held in your hand... The beauty hidden inside those geodes is amazing, and to add simple illumination from a tea light to make the stone "shine" is a great idea -- simple, beautiful. Simply beautiful. *sigh*
can I buy one of these from you, maybe? I have a friend who has a HUGE rock collection and a degree in geology.
I second the two above!
Gorgeous, indeed.
Hmmm...... Ok.
I'll make the next cutting project slabs, and I'll make some more stands. Not too difficult, and making half a dozen isn't much harder than making one or two.
It will be a few weeks probably....
So.. I'll post here when I have them ready to go and you can give me shipping address's.
but how much?
Breda.... I think 'nothing' would be a good price. A gift, sort of? I'll send some of Shirley and Al's business cards (People who own the store, and who I now live with). If anyone sees the thing and wants one, give them a card and tell them to call Shirley.
It will be a while anyway.... I'm going on vacation the end of next week, and will be away from here for a bit.
But.... I already picked out the geodes I want to slice the slabs from.... :-) I may not be able to help myself, and do some the next few days. It's a little addictive once you get started.
